Just 60 years ago America welcomed the Shopping Mall into its pristine suburban neighborhoods during the great post-war flight from the city. But according to Babson Marketing Prof. Michael Levy, in that short span of time, retail management has undergone a metamorphosis in every way. Levy is co-editor of the Journal of Retailing and recently released the 6th edition of the most read textbook on the subject, Retailing Management. He says that technology is driving change and influences everything--pricing, logistics, sales, how to find customers and of course, what to sell customers. "Many of my students say they really like clothes, or have a flair for fashion and want to get into retail. I tell them that's a good start, but you must also have a passion for analyzing data to make quick, wise decisions," says Levy. At the end of the day the successful retail manager will have worked 'mindfully' with a spellbound focus on the opportunities and accomplishments in a single 24-hour period. Amisha Patel '06 does everything in a big way—graduated Magna Cum Laude a few weeks ago, and landed a very sweet finance position at Shell Oil headquarters in Houston, her home town. Amisha also has strong opinions about her time here at Babson—which was busy, busy. She was Center for Women's Leadership (CWL) scholar, co-president of the Babson Entrepreneurship Teaching Alliance (BETA), sailed her way through exotic lands in the semester-at-sea program, helped rebuild businesses in tsunami-stricken Sri Lanka, and was honored to deliver an address to families and students at the Commencement Baccalaureate ceremony. At first, Amisha was a little skeptical about Babson's size and wondered---for a little while—if she would have been better off at a larger university near home. Listen to her thoughts about Babson and the good things that come in small packages. Stephen Spinelli Jr. and Janet StrimaitisAt Babson this week, 66 entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship professors teamed up to ruminate, dissect, and just plain better understand the nature of an entrepreneur. Babson's Jeffry Timmons welcomed them to the Price-Babson Symposium for Entrepreneurship Educators with simple, but very wise advice. "You need to give your students a framework of concepts that will save them time, money, frustration. And you need to do it without squashing their entrepreneurial spirit!" In good Babson fashion, Stephen Spinelli Jr. led the class in a lively discussion of the Babson Teaching Case, "ImageCafe", a website design firm eventually sold by its serial entrepreneur to Network Solutions. Was this the best option...to sell? Or should the founder have raised more money, reduced the burn rate, or maybe bring in a partner?Spinelli spent the rest of class time posing questions, extracting thoughts, and making connections between the nature of this particular entrepreneur and the ultimate option he chose. The ultimate take-away for educators? Spinelli was clearon this...they must help their entrepreneurs realize their unique skill sets and build on them. And when their entrepreneurs are close to both the "dream and the nightmare", educators must help them "channel" this integrative skill set into business decisions. "The ImageCafe entrepreneur had persistence, passion, drive, and picked up additional knowledge in law and finance," says Spinelli. "He was smart and recognized the need to be a mentor to his staff. But he didn't always integrate these skills when making decisions about the value of his company, or when negotiating with investors."
